Israel unleashes hell in Gaza

January 3, 2009

(My Hebrew is rusty, but I think this says “I am also against the war in Gaza”).

What a way to start the year. The news out of Gaza is so bad it’s almost too depressing to blog. Words seem very weak indeed against an army, and I feel powerless, impotently angry, and seething with rage at the lies I see repeated over and over again.

So far, Israeli airstrikes have murdered 450 Palestinians in Gaza, and as ground troops move in, the death toll is likely to rise.

Israel is addicted to war. There is no real strategic reason for this. The Israeli army was humiliated by Hezbollah in Lebanon in the summer of 2006, and lost status. The main reason for this war is to make the army look good. Palestinians confined in a massive prison camp, weakened by months of blockade, are going to be easy to defeat. It’s what the Americans call a turkey shoot. Murdering unarmed woman and children with weapons bought for them by the US taxpayer.

What I find most depressing about it all are the Hasbaraniks, Israel’s freelance propagandists, who flood the net with pro-Israel comment in a coordinated propaganda campaign. Israel has set up an organisation to ensure that these people remain on message. There is even Hasbara software to help them.

And so every news report about the atrocities in Gaza has hundreds of comments from Hasbaraniks defending Israel, usually claiming Israel had ‘no choice’ because ‘Hamas broke the ceasefire’.

They have learned Goebbels’ lesson well:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

– Joseph Goebbels

The big lie here is that Israel is the victim, when in fact it is the perpetrator.

This isn’t really the point, but in fact it was Israel that broke the ceasefire on 4 November 2008, as this excellent article in the London Review of Books points out. But they will keep repeating the lie until it becomes the accepted truth.

They have been assisted in this by YouTube, which has teamed up with the ADL to censor pro-Palestinian videos while continuing to host official Israeli army propaganda.

It also exposed the hypocrisy of those who opposed the academic boycott of Israel, as none of the 450 prominent opponents of the boycott raised any protest when the Islamic University of Gaza was bombed. Clearly, Palestinian academics don’t matter.

There is a very special place in hell reserved for these people.

When the US economy collapses and they can no longer sustain Israel, there will be a reckoning.

Anti-war protestors in Tel Aviv.

The only good news to come out of this is that even within Israel, there have been protests against the airstrikes.
