South African dockers refuse to unload Mugabe’s arms
Events in Zimbabwe took a disturbing turn yesterday when a Chinese shipment of arms bound for Zimbabwe docked at Durban Harbour.
The South African government’s cowardly response was to allow the shipment: according to government communication’s head Themba Moseka,
“We are not in a position to act unilaterally and interfere in a trade deal between two countries”.
(If there’s a club for useless, spineless leaders, Brown and Mbeki are certainly both in it).
Fortunately, the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) is showing some solidarity, backbone and politics by refusing to unload or transport the cargo.
General secretary Randall Howard said:
“Satawu does not agree with the position of the South African government not to intervene with this shipment of weapons.
“Our members employed at Durban Container Terminal will not unload this cargo neither will any of our members in the truck driving sector move this cargo by road.”
Now that’s what trade unions are for!
