The horror, the horror

June 14, 2007

There is a darkness at the heart of our culture, and it is our children that pay the price.

The front page of today’s Glasgow Herald makes depressing reading. The lead story is about a Scottish children’s home called Kerelaw where evidence of systematic child abuse on a massive scale has come to light:

“…there was a significant core of staff, around 40 individuals, directly involved in the abuse of young people.

“However, a far larger number of staff had knowledge and information about abuse and potential abuse, and were unwilling or unable to address this abuse.”

It’s a Glasgow City Council facility. Then, of course, there’s the Catholic Church, which has shown itself to be a haven for predatory child abusers.

The other story on the front page of The Herald is the one about Maddy. A letter was sent to a Dutch newspaper claiming to know the “vermoedelijke vindplaats Madeleine” – the letter claims she is buried just nine miles from where she disappeared. Portuguese police are searching the area.

The Dutch letter is apparently in the same handwriting as a tip of sent last year, leading to the discovery of two Belgian girls who disappeared.

I can’t think of anything more evil, or more horrible. What kind of monster can treat children like that? What must they be like inside?

I can’t begin to fathom it. But we need to walk away from Omelas.
