Eat the rich

MotörheadEat the Rich

It’s revolution time again.

Some time ago I wrote a despairing post about the failure of the Left to get is act together and change the world. We’ve all been there.

I had a couple of emails from readers who provided me with a bit of perspective – more on that later.

This fight has been going on for longer than our life times. The fact that despite everything, despite the massive power that Empire possesses, it still has not been able to destroy the human spirit, is in itself a victory.

The fact that the conspirators who attempt to carve up the world amongst themselves can’t meet without massive protests is a sign that the people of the planet have woken up to the fact that they are being cheated and lied to, and are determined to do something about it.

Of course, all the ‘responsible’ charities, all the Bob Geldofs and Bonos, condemn the ‘violence of the few’ – they would rather go back to hobnobbing with the rich and powerful, cadging favours and setting up poverty relief affiliate programmes.

The media focus on violent protest and us this an excuse to ignore the issues.

I was at the G8 protests in Edinburgh two years ago, and witnessed the violence first hand. Generally, it was borne out of the frustration people felt at being denied their right to protest, and at police heavy-handedness.

I mean really: what do tens of thousands of armed police in full body armour have to fear from a few kids throwing stones? And where’s the real violence? It’s all the people suffering the effects of undemocratic decisions taken by a few people protecting the influence of the rich and powerful.

We clearly terrified them, when our movement was born in the mountains of Chiapas and the streets of Seattle.

We need to keep up the pressure, and not let fear and despair get the better of us.
