The plot thickens…

April 5, 2007

The big news in Scotland this week is the trial of Peter Tobin, a 60-year old handyman, for the murder of Angelika Kluk, a 23-year old Polish student.

Ms Kluk was murdered in September last year, and her body found beneath the floorboards of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Anderston, Glasgow, where she was living, and where Tobin worked as a handyman. She apparently suffered a “very horrific and very, very violent death”.

Strange that a Polish girl would live at a church, but so far so nasty. The murder sent shock waves through the country, and particularly the Polish community, which has grown by 40,000 since that country joined the EU.

Tobin was arrested, and his trial started earlier this year. Then it began to get weird as the witnesses were called.

First up was Martin Macaskill, identified as her ‘lover’ in the TV news reports, who was clearly over 40 and showed up in court with his wife. He reported that he became concerned when Angelika failed to answer her phone, but was reluctant to ask after her at the church because he thought the parish priest might be jealous.

The next day the priest, Father Gerry Nugent, 63, takes the stand, and claims to have been having an affair with Angelika, as well as at least one other women. The prosecution claims he was insane with jealousy that she was seeing some one else.

Today it is claimed that he knew where the body was hidden – under the floor, just outside the confessional – before it was found. I’m not making this up

Something very bizarre is going on, and we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg in the news reports. It’s like Cluedo – father Gerry done it in the confessional with a communion wafer.

What terrible human tragedies lie beneath the headlines. A crime writer would have a field day.
